EVERY MEAL IS A STORY is about African cooking. It contains some recipes and many observations about the culture of food in Ghana. The recipes have been tested on visitors to Aba House, our cultural center/guest house in an African village, and the observations have been collected based on our 30 years interacting with people in Ghana.
Copies can be ordered through PAYPAL ( aba@culturalcollaborative.org) and cost is $20.00 which includes shipping in the USA.
Start the new year by trying one of our recipes.Abahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08862861802721755323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3504874689434919220.post-21496516743768728062014-12-02T07:50:00.000-08:002014-12-02T07:50:59.902-08:00Holiday Brochure

We work with children in a fishing village in Ghana. We've taught them not to beg,but to develop a work ethic. The children make paper from sugar cane leaves,journals/cards/boxes from the paper and all proceeds from sales pay for the children's school expenses.
Please look at our holiday catalog and consider helping our kids by buying something from our holiday catalog.
The WORLD CUP is still going on, but Ghana isn't. They did well until they didn't. We should still be proud of them. Electricity outages are the norm in Ghana, but during the matches there weren't any. Interesting how that works.

And now we are ready to start our summer program. For the first time we'll be working with expressive art therapists from around the world. A 2 week workshop. Our aim is to bring creative people together. This should do it!

What's next? In September we'll start planning. If you'd like to get information about upcoming workshops you can sign our mailing list at http://www.culturalcollaborative.org. We send out a newsletter every month or so.

WHY ARE AFRICAN TEXTILES IMPORTANT?
One of our concerns in Ghana is the loss of traditional textile
techniques. Young artisans want to be modern and also don't want to do
the tedious work required to be authentic.
There was a time when it took a weaver three months to make a kente
cloth. Now, many weavers rush to get cloth ready for the five day
market.
And now the traditional stamped adinkra cloth is giving way to silk screen. Visually a very different look.
Why? Silk screened images can be bigger, ink is cheaper and printing is faster.
Adinkra stamping is a cultural tradition in Ghana and one immediately recognized as being unique. Silk screened adinkra isn't.
Ironically, there's an adinkra symbol that means:
PEOPLE WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE OF THEIR HISTORY ARE LIKE A TREE WITHOUT ROOTS.

Ghana offers a rich glimpse into the soul of Expressive Arts Therapy ( EXAT ), the use of the arts for healing, community building and spirituality. Using the vast artistic resources of Ghana, Kate will introduce participants to the experience, theory and application of EXAT through a Jungian lens. Indigenous cultures have always known that the psyche is revealed not only through words, but through images, symbols and the body. The Expressive Arts reawaken the language of image, movement, sound, metaphor, drama and poetic utterances, revealing the deepest aspects of the self and expressing what often cannot be put into words. Drawing, painting, sculpture, movement, dance, sand play and ritual provide access to one’s inner world and as well as the culture, values, sense of community and spiritual attitude.
Did you know that mistletoe grows in trees?

I don't think we grow mistletoe in Ghana, but we have all sorts of interesting trees and plants, and of course, we make our paper from sugar cane leaves. We're starting to make plans for our summer programs. Want to join us?

I was invited to participate in an art residency in Romania at the beginning of January. How could I say no! At the end of the 10 days all of the international artists in attendance had an exhibition of their work in an honest to goodness castle. Pictured is one of my pieces and the exterior of the castle.

For more photos you can go to more here.

What a way to start the new year. Now back to reality, although I'm thinking of having a similar residency in Ghana. We'll have to forgo the castle.

This is a documentary about the Asante- the largest ethnic group in Ghana. As you will see in the film, animal sacrifice is part of African rituals. In the USA a ritual was just celebrated where they sacrifice a turkey. It's usually the chicken who looses in Africa.
If you saw the photo of a ceremonial umbrella in my living room, you can see them in action in this film.Abahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08862861802721755323noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3504874689434919220.post-62941889239196370222013-11-24T05:49:00.001-08:002013-11-24T05:52:43.035-08:00Interesting perspective

We all know the stereotypes about Africa. Would it surprise you to know that Africans have some strange ideas about "others"? Africans believe that foreigners (especially white ones) have no problems, have unlimited money, cars and all have high status.

They see outsiders as delicate. After all, they usually ride instead of walk and rarely carry heavy loads.

I was once in a farming village and walked a few miles to my hosts farm and then a few miles back. As we came out of the bush a crowd was gathering and they all started to clap. It was later explained to me that the enthusiasm was because they were surprised that I could walk so far.

Interesting perspective, as all the people returning from the farm (except me) were carrying heavy loads on their heads and I felt like such a wimp for walking unburdened.
